How many players do I need?

Short answer

In Fixed Pairs, 10 to 16 people — 5, 6, 7 or 8 teams. In Americano, exactly 4, 8 or 12 players; there are no other sizes.

In 30 seconds

  • In Fixed Pairs the app counts teams: Super 8 is 8 teams, meaning 16 people.
  • In Americano the app counts players — and it only runs with 4, 8 or 12. A 16-player Americano doesn't exist today.
  • There's no elimination: everyone plays to the end. Each team plays all of its matches, and in Americano every player plays every round.

The sizes that exist

The size is chosen under Home › Create new tournament › Step 2 — Format › Number of teams (or Number of players, in Americano). Only the sizes below appear — you can't type another number.

Fixed Pairs — round-robin

Choice in the app Teams People Total matches Matches per team
Super 5510104
Super 6612155
Super 7714216
Super 8816287

In Fixed Pairs there are no rounds on screen: since it's 1 court, matches come out in a single queue (Next match, Pending, Completed), arranged so nobody plays twice in a row.

Americano — rotating partners

Choice in the app Players Rounds Matches per round Total matches
4 players4313
8 players87214
12 players1211333

In Americano everybody plays every round: 3, 7 or 11 matches per person. The Matches tab shows the matches grouped by Round 1, Round 2…

What about how long it takes?

The app doesn't keep time. What shortens or stretches the tournament is the target in Step 2 — Format › Match to: 2, 3, 4 or 6 games. The score closes exactly at the target, so with a target of 4 the longest possible match is 4×3 — seven games. Too many matches on the schedule? Pick a lower target.

What goes wrong here

  • Want a 16-player Americano? It won't run today — Step 2 only offers 4, 8 or 12. With 16 people, the way to go is Super 8: 8 fixed teams, 28 matches.
  • “3 more players needed to complete the americano.” — the red message on Step 3 while any spot is still empty. Fill every spot.
  • “Dupla 3: escolha os dois jogadores.” (Team 3: choose both players.) — the same warning, in its Fixed Pairs version.
  • “A player was chosen in two spots.” — in Americano, each person goes in only once.

Why it works this way

The sizes are closed because the match schedule is pre-built and verified, not drawn. In Americano, the rotation that makes each player partner with every other exactly once only exists for 4, 8 and 12 players. In Fixed Pairs, the round-robin needs the exact number of teams to generate the matches in Step 4 — and after Generate and start, the size can't change anymore.
